These workshops expose learners and help build familiarity with Lanti@ cultures. Through exercising a rich sense of curiosity about language, food, and geographical aspects of Latin@ cultures, learners are left with a growing appreciation…and a few more Spanish words in their vocabulary.
The focus on culture workshops engage skills in: second language development; geography; cultural appreciation, exploring perspective and different beliefs; mathematics; applied skills.
Little Ones aged 5 to 9
Foods: bean and chicken enchiladas (cutting, assembly using pre-made sauces and bean filling, and cooking), guacamole, limonada or hot chocolate
Big Idea: Be exposed and build familiarity and curiosity with some of the language, food, and geographical aspects of Latinx and Spanish speaking cultures.
Learners Will:
- learn and use new Spanish vocabulary: sí; no; gracias; por favour; hola; me llamo…; cómo te llamas?; fruit and vegetable ingredient names in Spanish; buen provecho
- use a world map to identify Spanish speaking countries (North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Spain)
- develop a greater level of respect and curiosity for Spanish speaking cultures
- participate in the making a collective meal
- have an opportunity to examine and explore the artifacts that are brought in
Growing Ones aged 10 to 15 & Taller Ones aged 15 and up
Foods: enchiladas (make the refried beans, salsa, and pulled chicken), flan, guacamole, limonada or hot chocolate

- learn and use new Spanish vocabulary: gracias, por favour; hola, cómo te llamas?; me llama…; ingredient names in Spanish; te/me gusta; quisiera…; tienes/tengo hambre; sí; no; buen provecho
- use a world map to identify Spanish speaking countries (North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Spain)
- develop a greater level of respect and curiosity for Latinx culture
- participate in the making a collective meal
- have an opportunity to examine and explore the artifacts that are brought in
